The goal of the conference was to present the results of a regional economic study on Nearshoring and decarbonisation in the Western Balkans, which was conducted in cooperation with the Vienna Institute for International Economic Studies.
The study investigates whether, since the outbreak of the corona virus pandemic, there has been a trend of shortening the supply chain of German investors, i.e. whether investors are moving their production closer to the economic area of the European Union in order to reduce the risks associated with offshoring.
In addition, the importance of decarbonisation for investors considering direct investment or cooperation with local companies in this region is explored. It was analysed to what extent decarbonisation in the region promotes the trend of "nearshoring" and how it can be used for the economic development of the Western Balkans.
The preliminary results of the study indicate an increase in foreign direct investment in some of the economies in the Western Balkans since the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, as well as that the reasons for deciding to invest, have remained the same compared to the previous study.
The conference was attended by partners from the Western Balkans and Germany, including representatives of authorities, regional chambers, foreign investors and local companies.
