Employment of foreign nationals in Bosnia and Herzegovina

Foreign nationals seeking employment in BiH must have a work permit.

Work permits are issued by the competent employment service or by the regional offices responsible for the area in which the employer is headquartered. The employer submits, on behalf of the foreign worker, an application for the issuance of a work permit. A work permit is issued for a specific person, for a specific job, for a specific employer and for a specific period of time. A work permit expires when the employment ends. The work permit is valid for one year and can be extended.

Founders of a company, or enterprise, with its registered office in Bosnia and Herzegovina who perform certain tasks for that company, or enterprise, if such work does not constitute an employment relationship and does not last for more than a total of three months per year, do not need a work permit to work in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

If the founder of a company will also be its director and receive a salary for that work, they must have a work permit in accordance with the provisions of the Law on Foreigners of Bosnia and Herzegovina.
